Ladies Exercise Classes Durham: Come On Eileen and the fear of being laughed at

What is holding you back from embracing something new?

I ask you that because I see it all the time. You want to try a class, you feel drawn to the idea, and then your brain starts listing reasons to wait.

You might tell yourself you need more information first. Maybe you worry you will look awkward. You might wonder if everyone else will be fitter, younger, or more coordinated.

I get it. I have been there.

Ladies Exercise Classes – What I learned about confidence at music college

When I trained as a musician at music college in Birmingham, I spent far too much time worrying about playing the wrong notes.

I loved music. However, I did not enjoy performing.

Standing on a big stage in front of an audience felt like stepping into a spotlight where every tiny mistake would be noticed. I imagined criticism before I had even played a note.

On top of that, we had very limited options. Classical music was the only genre offered. It was taught as the correct way to do it, full stop.

Halfway through the course, my classmates and I started talking about what we would do next. I wanted to teach music. Some friends wanted to open a music shop.

And a group of friends wrote and released Come On Eileen, as part of Dexys Midnight Runners.

When other people do not like what you are doing

I remember a few of my classical music friends hearing the song on the local radio. Straight away, they judged it.

They said it was not a good song and said it was not to their taste.

Did that stop the band from putting it out into the world?

No.

They were not trying to please everyone. Instead, they were finding their people.

That is the bit I want you to take with you.

When you wait for everyone to approve, you stay stuck. When you focus on what you want and who it is for, you start.

How this shows up in Swing dance fitness and our Ladies Exercise Classes in Durham

I speak to so many new SwingFit members who say the same thing.

They wanted to try Swing dance fitness, but they held back because it felt unfamiliar. Furthermore, they worried they would not know what to do. Additionally, they worried they would not have all the information.

Some people who go on to become SwingFit instructors tell me they felt exactly the same before their first training session.

So I want you to hear this clearly.

Feeling awkward at the start is normal. It is part of learning. It is not a sign you are not made for it.

Also, you do not have to figure it out on your own.

If there is something you want to know, ask me. Ask your instructor. Ask before you come, or when you arrive. You will get a kind answer.
